Paul paced back and forth in the waiting room his right arm in a sling.
"Paul come on sit down. He's going to be all right."
"I should have kept him under tougher surveillance…" he looked up to the ceiling trying to force the tears away, but he couldn't. Not this time.
Ruth pulled on his left arm and he sat next to her. She hadn't seen him cry since Sarah died almost ten years ago.
"He kept asking me to put on a vest…Hey! I'm ‘Lucky Smith'! I don't need one! And because of my stupid attitude I could loose him. He shielded me, Ruth! I should have taken those bullets! I don't want to loose him…"
She held him. She could think of nothing to say that would make things all right, or better. Only his son pulling through, would solve his sorrow. After a while, Arbor came over and sat down beside him.
"Paul, Colt will be all right. I know it. He loves you. In the last few days, I've never seen him so happy. He kept pushing my buttons about camping, but finally we talked about going to Europe. He wants you two to spend a month in Paris, because it's the city of love, or a romantic month in Italy, where you two can become romantic lovers!" Arbor said in a calming voice.
"With two teenage boys!" Paul smiled "He' really wants to go to Europe?"
"Yeah, of course he and I would go off on our own, to the UK and such. I'm sure he's got our part all mapped out and organized, down to, on Monday afternoon, we will eat Fish and Chips." Arbor laughed.
"Europe. You know I have enough frequent flyer miles to fly us all around the world three times!"
"He knows. I think that's what got him started!"
"I've got enough vacation, and comp time, I could take a year off with full pay" smiled Paul. "I suppose he knows that too!"
"Paul let's do it!" said Ruth, and then she kissed him on the lips.
"Excuse me, Mr. Smith" said the Doctor smiling, "Your son is in recovery. He's doing fine considering what he's been through. We removed three bullets. Two from his back not serious at all, and one from his right buttock - that one might hurt for a while. We set his arm and his chest is taped and he'll have to wear the bandage for a while, until the ribs have mended. And it will be at least four weeks before the cast on his arm can come off. Other than that he's fine. He wants to see you, and his mother and brother. I suggest one at a time for a short visit."
"Thank you! Very much" Paul said "And how is Kevin Mitchell?"
"Ornery, a real pain in the butt, but he has been quieter since we brought your son in. I think he wants to surprise your son. Try and keep him quiet" the Doctor said with a chuckle.
"Colt" Paul said softly "Colt."
"Dad…" he said looking like he'd just awakened from a pleasant sleep with a faint smile
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. You?"
"Okay. The helicopter…what happened?"
"Crashed and burned. No survivors. Computer is just a bunch of melted plastic and metal."
"All the research and circuitry…melted?"
"Yes. Our guys tried to salvage it, but it was beyond salvaging."
"They deserved to die for what they did to Keith and Alan and Arb and Kevin…" Colt said sadly.
"Hey, Hotshot! I owe you one!"
Colt's eyes brightened up at the sound of Kevin's voice.
"Kevin! They told me they killed you…I told them they were going to die when Horace said he eliminated you."
"Well, I'm glad they did. Keith and Alan didn't deserve to die…"
"Did they shoot you?"
"Yes. The guy was a lousy shot. Two shots and missed all the vital organs."
"They shot Dad in the arm and they got me in the butt! My poor cute butt it's going to have a scar on it! And a couple in the back."
"Hey! We can compare scars later!" said Kevin.
"Colt, you saved my life. I owe you big time" said Paul.
Colt smiled "I didn't want to loose you…you're my dad and I love you."
"I love you too, son. And I've decided something. You will always come first in my life. Now, I hear you've been planning a trip to Europe."
Colt's face, as bruised as it was, beamed.
"I think at least a month maybe more, but we'll talk about it later." Paul smiled.
"The last thing you said was Keith warned you about this happening. What did you mean?"
Colt smiled "He used to call me Gussie Mouseheimer, sometimes. And the day we first tested Mother the test program was called ‘FUCKyou'…I used ‘Fuckyou' as the password for Mother II. That's the name of the self-destruction program. It shuts off every system within a fifty feet radius, of the target. Anyway, Keith said one day somebody would punch me out for using that phrase and Horace did! I think I've learned my lesson."
"Dad, there is something you need to know about me," said Colt.
"What's that son?"
"Yeah, I know," Paul smiled, "I heard all about Alex." Paul laughed, "And Billy, and Michael, and Bastian, and Peter."
"So, you don't hate me?"
